GIIS: Vangelis Floros

QUESTION 1. DO YOU "CONNECT TO GRIDS" OR "WALK ON CLOUDS"?

I guess, I'd prefer to connect to a cloud of grids.

QUESTION 2. WHAT ARE THESE TECHNOLOGIES (GRID COMPUTING AND CLOUD COMPUTING) FOR YOU?

They represent complementary approaches for providing on-demand computing capabilities (in terms of processing power, storage or algorithms) over the net. Clouds bring flexibility and ease of use, whereas Grids bear the philosophy of collaboration and resource sharing among humans and computing machines.

QUESTION 3. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE THEM TO BE FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD IN THE FUTURE?

In the immediate future I see a trend to exploit Cloud capabilities in order to provide Grid Sites as a service (shall I add GaaS in the family of *-aaS acronyms?). Clouds will be coupled with existing Grid infrastructures as back-end middleware to enable establishment of elastic Grids - Grid infrastructures that can dynamically adopt their size and offered services according to specific, potentially transient, end-user demands. One thing is sure; the future of
distributed computing looks exciting and full with potentials.
