Welcome to Vilnius and the EGI User Forum 2011!

Several of us from EGI.eu are now installed in various hotels around Vilnius, eagerly waiting for the start of the event tomorrow.

In a bid to acclimatise to the slightly chillier Lithuanian temperatures than we’ve been used to lately, some of us took a walk from the Radisson Blu into town yesterday. There are two landmarks you can’t really miss – the white Vilnius Cathedral Belfry in Cathedral Square, and the Upper Castle, perched on the top of one of the city’s famous seven hills. This symbol of Lithuania is also known as Gediminas’ Tower, after the founder of Vilnius. The view from the top of the tower gives an impressive panorama of the spires and jumbled roofs of the Old Town, although the climb up there is probably best described as ‘bracing’. (We didn’t spot the handy funicular train on the other side of the hill until after we reached the top). From the roof, you can easily spot the conference venue – logo added to make it really obvious!

Tonight we’ll be setting up our various booths in the conference exhibition area – drop by the EGI dissemination and user community support booths and say hello while you’re here. This year we are running a ‘treasure hunt’ round our exhibition area. Pick up a form from the booth and check out the prizes for the lucky winners. We are also of course running our best demo and best poster competitions again at the event – you should find a voting slip in your conference pack when you register.

Our gala dinner will be on Wednesday evening at a very special venue, and we look forward to welcoming you to that, with entertainment from our local hosts. For the inside scoop on where to eat on other evenings, whether traditional Lithuanian food, or something a bit out of the ordinary, User Community Support Officer, Karolis Eigelis gives some guidelines on the EGI blog.

Enjoy the event!
