Building application specific supercomputers

Following lunch the school broke in two parallel sessions. Giannis Koutsou, in the main auditorium offered a practical session focusing on Advanced MPI Programming. In the Cyprus Institute seminar room Heiko Schick of IBM gave a presentation about QPACE, the machine built by a consortium of academic and industrial partners including IBM, U. Wuppertal, U. Regensburg et. al., for Lattice QCD research. The machine design was discussed in detail and several lessons learned were presented. Heiko's talk concluded with several key considerations supercomputer designers have to deal with on the way to the exascale computers.
