OGF 28 Day 1

Due to snow my flight spent about 45 minutes in holding pattern before landing at Munich Airport so I was not able to make it to any of the first set of sessions. After dropping off my luggage, I was able to register in time for a cup of coffee and the National Cloud Initiative Roadmap.

This OGF has about 250 attendees. After the opening and keynote talk, the incoming and outgoing OGF board members were acknowledged by the OGF President and CEO Dr. Craig Lee.

Unfortunately the Firewall Virtualization session was unfortunately cancelled because the session chair was not present. Thijs Metsch from Sun^h^h^hOracle gave me a brief summary of what Firewall Virtualization is about. Basically the idea is to reduce the work of system administrators by allowing firewalls to be dynamically configured as needed for example to allow protocols like gridftp to traverse the network. The group charter can be found here.

OGF28 - Software Development Tools for Distributed Applications

15 March 2010 - Room A119

The aim of the workshop is to ideally follow the previous organized at OGF25 in Catania by OGF-Europe whose aim was to analyze the challenges in the development of distributed applications including a collection of best practices across Europe for standard adoption; the workshop also included interesting presentations around the rise of the so called hybrid computing (multicore, GPU, etc.).

The workshop is directed at expanding the discussion with contributions on the ongoing efforts for the design of tools and programming models for the development and executions of applications on cloud infrastructures, the advances on the implementations of standards for Grids and Clouds and the issues in the development of HPC applications in hybrid environments (GPUs, multicores, etc) with also an industrial perspective on such new trend in supercomputing looking at both the needs of users, and what the vendors provide today.

OGF28 in Munich

OGF returns to Europe for its first event of 2010, and will assemble in Munich, Germany from March 15-19.

Nestled in the heart of beautiful Munich, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, will be the local host of the 28th OGF.

The theme for OGF28 is "The Future of Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI)". To find out more, and to register, visit the OGF28 page here. Advance registration is available until February 15th.
