Using Grid Computing Network to Access GPGPUs Computing Platforms

Monica Hernandez, Engineer of the High Performance and Scientific Computing Unit of UIS-Colombia does CUDA Instruction to SC-CAMP'12 Participants
"Today is the GPGPU Computing Day in SCCAMP'12. Using GridUIS-2, the distributed computing platform of the  Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia, the participants can access to GUANE-1, the most famous GPGPU platform in Colombia, because is the most powerful GPGPU cluster of the country in this moment. With 64 C2075 NVIDIA TESLA GPUs distributed in 8 nodes, each one with 104 GB of RAM, 3 high bandwidth networks and more special characteristics, GUANE-1 was performed to support mainly research activities in different domains related with energy, environment and bio in tropical conditions.

GPGPU computing allows to treat scientific problems exploiting GPUs, graphic cards designed to support multi-threading. Different platforms in the world are deployed to some projects, from science life to weather research. Nowadays, GPGPU computing is more than a trend in high performance and scientific computing. During the CUDA Day, the "SCCAMPers" learn basis of CUDA seeing specific examples seen with other paradigms (as MPI and OpenMP) to compare performance and other features. The CUDA Day is managed by Pedro Velho, researcher at UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil and Monica Hernandez, Engineer of the High Performance and Scientific Computing Unit (SC3-UIS) in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Tents Open, SCCAMP'12 go!!

SCCAMP 2012 Tents of Participants
"Yesterday afternoon, 53 students selected from Venezuela and Colombia plus 8 instructors from different countries met at Vegasol, Merida State in Venezuela, for the 2012 edition of the Supercomputing and Distributed Systems Camp School.

Inspired by the idea of taking advantage of the Internet and high speed networks available today (however the loss of connexion during 12 hours), one can exploit high performance computing infrastructures from anywhere, even located in the middle of the nature. This year, SCCAMP is in Vegasol, an equatorial site in the Venezuelan Andes with tropical conditions: 35°C degrees of temperature, palm trees in the middle of the mountains and rivers.

SC-Camp is an initiative of researchers to offer to undergraduate and master students state-of-the-art lectures and programming practical sessions upon High Performance and Distributed Computing topics. SC-Camp is a non-profit event, addressed to every student including those that lack of financial backup. This year the event will be hosted by Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida Venezuela

In this version, special topics as bio-informatics, Grid computing flavos and colors, FPGAs programming and massive parallel processing programming based in CUDA will be developed during 6 days of Supercomputing Camp".

Open Applications to SC-CAMP 2012

SC-CAMP, the Supercomputing and Distributed Computing School open the application process to participation for the 2012 version that will be held in Mérida Venezuela.

Inspired by the idea to develop a camping school in the middle of the nature addressed to undergraduate and master students, SC-CAMP'12 offer a state-of-the-art lectures and programming practical sessions upon High Performance and Distributed Computing topics: Parallel Programming, Scalable Architectures (Cluster Computing, Grid Computing, Cloud Computing), Green Computing, High Interaction Performance Computing, e-Science and more.

This year, SC-Camp will be hosted by the Universidad de Los Andes, at Mérida, Venezuela from 9th to 15th July, in the Vega Sol Camping Resort.

SC-Camp is a non-profit event, addressed to every student including those that lack of financial backup. Last year all students that applied in due time received a grant to attend lectures, including meals and accommodations. Since the first version, SC-Camp has been supported by RedCLARA and different international organizations, as  is the case of GridTalk and ISGTW as media partners.
